The rhyme slinks ashamed through the verse
Afraid to chime or to be heard
It clings to cloying alliterative tricks
Asinine assonance and archaic words
Forcing kenning where none should go
Te rhyme slides past on uneasy show
A self-conscious performer in second-hand light
Like the poet here who sat down to write
A eulogy where no joy dwells --
There is a language in which our sentences match and overlap
And our meanings interweave like butterflies in love
There is a satisfactory ending somewhere in another tongue
But it is not this one.
