In my memory the light is always low,
the spilled orange ichor of an extinguishing summer day.
My back is always to me,
I mean to the camera of my recollecting eye,
and I cannot see the horizon,
only to the small of my infant back,
shadows spreading from my sandals
and filling the dimples, my footsteps
in the sea-smoothed sand;
I don't think that I was happy,
even then.
