What is a woman?

what is a woman?
well, anything she wants to be
if the misogyny doesn't get in her way.
there are people who'll tell you
it's more complicated than that,
bring out charts and graphs and acronyms
and swear blind that she can't be anything
if they haven't signed off on it.
but there's those who think womanhood
should be a trap, a prison door closing off
every avenue but three:
maiden (whore)
mother (furniture)
and crone (corpse),
and there's those who simply choose
to go running laughing toward womanhood,
spinning and singing toward it,
clasping ecstatic femininity to their chests,
wild with love for woman-ing,
and I would never dream of telling you
which way to turn,
but it were my choice,
I know which I'd like best.
