i don't have an apocalypse survival plan
i intend to go death empty-handed
and at the start of the race
while it still has its breath
and can do the job quickly
without dragging it out for months
along with my skin
along with my hope
along with my grief.

I like the language here. Also, having seen the movie When The Wind Blows, being in the middle of a major urban center with no survival plan isn't the worst option.

I read the comic far younger than was sensible (Raymond Briggs being mostly famous in the UK for children's comics, like The Snowman and Father Christmas Goes On Holiday and Fungus The Bogeyman, I immediately seized on the book at the local library and was like AHA! MORE RAYMOND BRIGGS. oh boy) and I suspect that has had a hand in shaping my views on this subject. A lot of Brits a bit older than me had a similar reaction to Threads, which was a post-nuclear series set in Northern England and which is just BLEAK BLEAK BLEAK BLEAK.
