what a world: my grandmother was born
into one where no holocaust had yet occurred;
millions of bodies as yet unburied,
mass graves not yet dug.
my mother was born into one
where capital punishment had yet to take
its final life upon our soil
in a silhouette of a hanging on a tv screen.
and i was born to two germanies and
two towers; two tribes still going to war,
one Yugoslavia
and a lovers’ apocalypse in full swing.
no one will come after me,
thank God:
look at what a world i’d be leaving them to inherit.
